According to foreign media reports, Coca-Cola Amatil will stop distributing plastic straws and bartenders in Australia. Instead, it is a paper straw approved by the Recyclable and Biodegradable Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The new paper straws will be sourced from BioPak and Austraw and will be available through Amatil's ordering platform to 115,000 stores across Australia, including bars, cafes, fast food restaurants, as well as grocery stores, petrol and convenience stores.
The transition period will take place in the next two months.
Coca-Cola Managing Director Alison Watkins said: "We are serious about fulfilling our responsibilities and reducing unnecessary plastic packaging. We have clearly heard the voice of the community - unnecessary packaging is unacceptable. We need to work together to reduce waste and Marine pollution."
Other companies have also pledged to ban the use of plastic straws, including Disney, Pernod Ricard, Starbucks, Diageo and Scotch Whisky Association. Various paper-based gold polka dot straws
, orange and white striped straws
, solid black paper straws
were designed for different needs or special company.
The Coca-Cola Company hopes that by 2025, all its packaging, including bottles, cans, plastic film and straws, will be fully recyclable.
